Sunny Brook Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Program offers a 3 tier therapy program to disabled persons focusing on sport & recreation riding techniques as well as other therapeutically beneficial programs to non-riders. Riding a horse increases strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, coordination & fine motor skills. Other benefits include emotional & behavioral development skills for individuals unable to ride but willing to participate in a work experience program or an equine friends program.
By providing a safe and barrier free multi use program through an accessible facility that is open to all persons with disabilities to use, increases sport and leisure choices to our disabled population while also providing physically and emotionally therapeutic benefits to address various medical or physical conditions ranging in: learning disabilities, hearing and speech impairment, developmental delay, visual impairment, amputation, spinal cord injuries, arthritis, traumatic brain damage, autism, hyyper/activity, Ad/disorder, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Scoliosis, Spina Bifida, Down Syndrome, Muscular Dystrophy and Poliomyelitis.
Three program options exist for program participants and allow for full inclusion of the target group.
Theraputic Riding: An affordable 12-week long Therapeutic Riding Program enables 15 participants per session to partake in a physical activity that would otherwise be unaccessible to our disabled population. With specialized equipment such as a loading ramp to mount atop a horse equipped with adaptive saddles and tack, participants will be provided with one-hour of riding instruction per week that will be uniquely designed by an Occupational Therapist and a Candadian Equestrain Federation Coach to meet each individual’s physical needs.
Wrangler Work Experience: Is a work experience program for teens and young adults to prepare for employment. As Wranglers, participants will be expected to adhere to a work schedule, carryout job duties, prioritize their work day to meet deadlines as well as to work as an equally contributing member of a team. Once a Wrangler has completed their minimum work hour requirment, they will be provided with a job evaluation and work reference.
Equine Friends: Is a hands-on opportunity for non-riders to interact with a horse-friend that they care for, groom, feed and visit each week. The goal of this special pairing is to provide a participant with emotional and social development skills as well as to provide some physically therapeutic benefits with fine motor skills atained from the motion of grooming a horse. The overall goal of S.T.E.P is to provide a unique and accessible program for persons of any age who are identified as having a physical, developmental, medical or emotional disability and that would benefit from one or more key areas:
Physical Therapy
Work Experience / Employment Readiness
