Northwestern Independent Living Services Inc. (NILS) is a non-profit organization that provides personal support and homemaking services to individuals 16 years of age and over living in their own homes throughout the Kenora & Rainy River Districts.
NILS has been providing assistance since 1986 and offers a number of integrated programs that are based on the needs of the individual.
NILS will now be providing temporary, short term assistance for a set cost, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. If needing longer-term services, your name could be placed on a wait list for services that are funded by the NW Local Health Integration Network.
The following are services are available on a fee for service basis:
The Personal Skills offered may include, but are not limited to the following:
Brushing teeth, bed baths, showers, tub baths, shaving, toileting to include inserting suppositories, disimpaction, enemas, emptying catheters, condoms, urine bottles, bedpans, ileostomy bag maintenance, colostomy bag maintenance, diapering, grooming, hair care, skin care such as applying creams/lotions, changing dressings, turning consumers in order to prevent bedsores, intermittent catheterization, bladder irrigations, assisting consumer in taking oral medication.
Includes full dressing or undressing, assistance with buttons, fastenings, zippers, shoes, boots, assisting in the application of technical devices such as braces, splints, etc.
Bed to chair, chair to toilet, wheelchair to chair, chair to bathtub, chair to fitness equipment, chair to mode of transportation, and reverse.
To further assist consumers when necessary by manipulating wheelchair if their disability is such that this action is totally impaired. Also assist with wheelchair maintenance and cleaning.
Preparation and serving of meals, bibbing, spillages, food cutting, feeding, adhering to special diets.
Assist with physiotherapy and range of motion exercises.
Sorting laundry, loading machine and dryers, folding laundry, putting away laundered clothes, ironing.
Vacuuming, changing linens, cleaning bathroom area, sweeping, mopping floors, dusting.
Meeting consumer at destination and assisting with shopping for personal items, groceries, banking and other business.
Include staying overnight in assisting with any or all of the above services.
services are available to individuals 16 years of age and over who reside in their own homes in the Kenora Rainy River District.
Cost for Services
Prices for services are as follows:
• $25 per hour
• Minimum 15 minutes per day
• There are no maximum hours per day
Employees of Northwestern Independent Living Services receive extensive orientation and training that enables them to perform all aspects of their job description.
